We are a full school with 325 boys and girls between the ages of 3-13. We are subject to a 106 Agreement with the local borough council that restricts the size of the pupil roll to 325. Pressure for places throughout the school is intense. Girls are prepared for the Common Entrance Examination (or scholarship) at the end of Years 6 – 8: boys at the end of Year 8.
On average, 25% of leavers win scholarships to Senior Schools each year. In 2004-2005 of 32 pupils in Year 8, 20 sat for scholarships and 12 were successful, these included academic awards to The Royal Grammar School Guildford (2), Sports Scholarships to Millfield (2), and a Music Scholarship to Rugby School. However whilst academic work is undoubtedly the backbone of the school, we are not an examination ‘hot-house’.
The School provides the National Curriculum. There is setting from Year 4 onwards. The academic curriculum is broad but balanced and includes English, Mathematics, Science, French, History, Geography, Design Technology, Latin, Religious Studies, Art, Music, Physical Education, and Personal and Social Education. Pupil performance is independently audited using PIPS. The Keffolds Dyslexia Centre (with three full time teachers) provides dyslexic support.
The school offers a limited number of scholarships (there are six scholars in the school at present) and short-term bursarial support (generally defined as ‘for two terms only’) to current parents who face sudden financial hardship. Children of teaching staff pay significantly reduced fees.
Whilst the amount of ‘concrete laid per annum’ does not guarantee educational success £2,750,000 investment in buildings in the last six years, suggest that Amesbury is confident about its future. This investment includes a new Nursery, Sports Hall Complex, Academic building, major refurbishment of the Lutyens building and a Performing Arts Centre. During the academic year 2005-2006 the school is investing a further £600,000 building a second floodlight multi-purpose playing area, an extension to the sports hall and further refurbishment of the Pre-Preparatory Department and Lutyens building.
Games and extra activities flourish. For boys, the major games are rugby, soccer, hockey and cricket and for girls, netball, hockey and rounders. There are two full time PE specialists (male and female). Tennis is particularly strong with 100+ pupils having private tuition, with five specialist coaches. The first of our own sports scholars, won a tennis scholarship to the National Tennis Academy in Bath in July 2005.
Music thrives - with impressive choirs and 100+ children between the ages of 7 - 13 playing instruments. So, too, do the visual and Performing Arts. The annual Art Exhibition and Performing Arts Festival are both central features in the school calendar. In recent years the Chapel Choir and Big Band have toured Italy, USA and Sweden.
The Common Room is animated, friendly, supportive and successful: a healthy mix of middle-aged experience and young ‘Turks’. Details on the website give a clearer insight into their backgrounds. What sort of teacher enjoys Amesbury? One who has mastery of his or her chosen subject, is a good communicator, has a keen sense of humour and is willing to roll up his or her sleeves to make the school a better place. The ‘dry’ academic is not well suited, nor the teacher who expects everything to be done for them.
Amesbury is a day school operating Monday to Friday. The preparatory school starts at 8.15am and the oldest children finish at 5.45pm. There are occasionally meetings after school, and occasional weekend commitments (sporting fixtures are normally played on Wednesdays and Thursdays) but in the normal run of things the Common Room do not have weekend commitments.
In just the same was as we believe that it is good for pupils to develop interests out of school and have the opportunity to be with their families, so too the Common Room. However there is one week set aside in the Michaelmas Term for preparatory school pupils of ‘residential learning activities’ and all preparatory school staff are expected to be directly involved in that. This year Year 8 were based in Snowdonia, Year 7 in France and Year 6 in Kent.
Surrey/Hampshire house prices are higher than in the North and Southwest but lower than Central London. The nearby towns of Guildford, Chichester, Haslemere, Petersfield and Farnham are congenial places to live with Universities, drama groups, strong musical traditions etc. The rail and motorway links provide quick and easy access to all parts of the country: Central London, the coastline of Sussex and Hampshire and ferry to France are all less than an hour away on good days!

Amesbury |
A day school in Hindhead Surrey UK nr. Haslemere in Hampshire with limited boarding capacity.
Our principal purpose is simply that we want every child to
enjoy his or her time at school; to feel valued as individuals,
in an educational environment where their talents can prosper to the benefit of the
community.
So when the time comes to leave us, each will do so with their confidence high,
skills sharpened and personalities rounded.
