Admissions
This section is intended to explain the admissions
procedure to Amesbury.
Amesbury is a school of 325 pupils (limited in size by
agreement with Waverley Borough Council). The school is
normally oversubscribed. The main points of entry are
Pre-Nursery and Reception (from September 2006) and Year
3 (aged 7+). Other places are offered
on an occasional basis when vacancies arise.
It is now common for pupils to join us from local state
primary and preparatory schools at the end of Year 6,
and spend two years studying for Common Entrance before
going on to their independent senior school. They join
as full members of the school and in recent years such
pupils have captained school teams, been elected to the
School Council, Head of School, and won
scholarships to their senior schools.
Places in the pre-preparatory and preparatory schools
are only offered on the basis that a pupil will flourish
at Amesbury and that when the time comes he or she will
be able to succeed at Common Entrance or scholarship.
Places are offered in the following order of preference:
- Siblings: The brothers and sisters of pupils
already at Amesbury are offered 1st priority on
places in the pre-preparatory department.
- Places in the first year of preparatory school
(Year 3) are offered to pupils in the final
year of the pre-preparatory department (Year 2).
- Date of registration: Places are offered by the
date on which Registration Forms are received at the
school. However in order to maintain the
co-educational nature of year groups, separate
registration lists are maintained for boys and
girls.
Application Procedure
- To arrange to meet the headmaster (and other key
members of staff) and to tour the school please call
the Headmaster’s Secretary.
- In order to register a pupil on the ‘School
List’, complete the Registration Forms and return
them to the Headmaster’s Secretary.
- From Reception class onwards pupils visit for a
morning/day, meet classmates, key members of staff
and undergo a variety of assessments.
- After a visit (and subject to availability) a
place may be offered. A letter confirming the offer
of a place and a starting date will be sent to
parents.
The school deems the place accepted and confirmed on
receipt of the completed School Contract (and refundable
confirmation of entry deposit). The child’s name is then
placed on a class list.
The Headmaster’s Secretary can advise on Admissions and
Scholarships.
