Events throughout the year
Michaelmas
The academic year begins in early September and ends
with the annual preparatory school Carol service at St
Luke’s Church, Grayshott.
Harvest Festival takes place in early October and
there are three choral evensongs per term (Junior,
Intermediate and Senior).
Half Term takes placed towards the end of October),
and is preceded by ‘Curriculum Enrichment Week’ which
involves Years 5-8 going away from school on subject
based residential courses.
There are internal examinations for all pupils in
Years 5-8 in the second half of the Michaelmas Term.
On the sporting front the year starts with Rugby for
boys and moves on to Football after half term whilst
girls play Netball throughout the term.
There is no Saturday School.
Lent
The term starts in the first week of January, and
finishes mid to late March dependent upon the date of
Easter.
Some girls in Year 6 complete their entry
examinations to senior schools in late January - early
February. Year 8 have internal mock examinations towards
the end of the term. The senior school scholarship
‘season’ gets underway for pupils in Years 6 and 8.
We announce the names of Rose Scholarship Winners.
Girls play Netball and Hockey, whilst boys play
Football and Hockey.
The Friends of Amesbury organise an annual Quiz Night
and takes place immediately after half term.
The Head Boy and Head Girl are elected along with
School Prefects at the end of the term.
The annual school ski trip takes place in the first
week of the holidays and is made up of pupils, parents
and staff.
Trinity
The term starts in early April and comes to an end in
early July with Speech Day and Prize Giving for the
preparatory school. Our Guests of Honour at Prize Giving
in recent years have included journalist Kirsty Lang,
actor and former pupil James Dreyfuss, historian Richard
Holmes, from the world of sport Rugby World Cup winning
All Black John Gallagher, the Roving Ambassador for
ORBIS Dr Brian Little, and The Rev Dr Giles Fraser.
The Performing Arts Festival opens with the Year 6
Play immediately prior to half term and closes with the
Year 8 Play towards the end of June. The Leavers then
depart for their week long ‘Leavers Trip’ in the first
week of June.
Year 8 have Common Entrance examinations the week
after half term, normally the first week in June.
Boys play Cricket and girls Rounders. They both
compete at intra and inter- school level at Athletics
and Tennis.
The penultimate weekend of term is set aside to
welcome Old Amesburians. There is a BBQ on the Friday
evening, and a formal dinner on the Saturday evening
(after the Headmaster’s versus OA’s Cricket & Rounders
Matches). The Friends of Amesbury often organise a
Summer Dance for this weekend.
