Speech and Drama
In Years 3 - 5 pupils are taught in groups of no more
than four per group, 40 minutes per session. All lessons
are scheduled outside the core curriculum subject times.
Lessons begin with vocal and physical warm-ups that are
designed to help students relax, focus attention and
help build confidence. Improvisation and mime will be
included alongside techniques to aid clear articulation
of ideas and projection of sound.
In Years 6 - 8, where Performing Art lessons form part
of the curriculum, group Speech and Drama sessions
continue alongside individual lessons for those who wish
to continue with LAMDA exams and/or specialise with a
view to future scholarship applications to Secondary
schools, for example. The length of these individual
lessons is decided according to the need of each pupil.
Pupils are encouraged to take LAMDA exams, and to
participate in our own Speech and Drama Festival and the
Godalming Festival.
Dance Lessons
Pupils are taught in groups, usually of no more than six
per group, 40 minutes per session. These lessons are
scheduled during lunchtime or break. Lessons are
optional and follow the Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus.
Pupils in Years 6 - 8 may continue ballet or tap lessons
as in Years 3 - 5. They also have the option of
attending Break Dancing or Street Dancing sessions held
during a lunch break each week.
The department works closely with the English department
to develop written and spoken communication, the overall
aim being to co-ordinate topics to promote a holistic
learning environment. The annual Summer Arts festival is
a feature of the academic year.
