French

This subject is lead by a French graduate and qualified teacher.

It is taught from Reception onwards and by graduate specialists from Year 2 onwards. The Department is well resourced and has easy access to a variety of the latest technologies. The teaching of French at Amesbury is structured to develop pupils’ communicative skills in French and their understanding of how the language works.

French is spoken where appropriate in the classroom and class activities are designed to increase pupils’ confidence and enthusiasm for communicating in French. At the same time, grammar is taught thoroughly in order to give pupils an understanding of how the foreign language works and thus enable them to use the language productively and creatively.

The work is carefully differentiated within each year group to ensure that all pupils work at a level that provides them with a feeling of success and sufficient challenge.

For pupils who join the preparatory school, but who have not come from our preparatory department, care is taken to ensure that their needs are catered for by placing them in appropriate sets and by arranging individual extra tuition for them, if so desired. There are a number of annual events in the school calendar run by the Modern Languages department. For many children the highlight is the annual Year 7 residential trip to Chateau de la Baudonniere in Normandy.
