Latin

Latin is taught (up to Scholarship level) to Set 1 children in Years 7 and 8 whilst other pupils study classical civilisation.

The course has two main aims:

  • to give a firm understanding of the essentials of the Latin language
  • to foster an interest in the Greek and Roman Worlds

Children are taught to translate from Latin to English as well as the other way round. They are taught to manipulate basic grammar.

The C.E. Paper is split into two levels. Exceptional children, or those who are entering senior schools that insist on the higher level, take Level 2 at Common Entrance. All others take Level 1.

Classics

Those in Set 2 take Classics.

Classics is NOT required for Common Entrance.

The Classics Course has two principal aims:

  • to foster an interest in the Greek and Roman Worlds
  • to help the children know a range of appropriate learning techniques (Study Skills)
