Mathematics
The Department is lead by a graduate
mathematician, supported a number of other
specialist teachers.
In Years 3 & 4 children are taught by a Form
Teacher and supported by a classroom assistant. All
classrooms benefit from interactive and digital
technology. From Year 5 onwards children are placed
in one of three sets on the basis of their aptitude
and ability in the subject. There is normally a 1st
Set and two 2nd Sets. This arrangement enables there
to be free movement of pupils between the various
sets dependent upon progress and levels of
attainment.
The department aims to:
- Promote positive attitudes towards
mathematics and a general enthusiasm for the
subject.
- Promote high standards of numeracy
throughout the school.
- Provide the pupils with the opportunity to
learn different strategies for problem-solving.
- Prepare the pupils for any necessary tests
and exams.
The National Curriculum is used as the basic core
with the IAPS Common Entrance Syllabus interwoven
into the schemes of work, however our primary aim is
to ensure that pupils view mathematics as a means to
understand themselves, their environment and their
place in the universe, rather than purely a means to
pass exams.
