Physical Education & Games
The two full time specialist Physical Education (P.E.)
teachers are assisted by a number of experienced and
well-qualified coaches. Many members of the academic
staff specialise in teaching one or more sports.
Physical Education lessons start in Reception and are
taught by specialists.
In the preparatory school children have a double period
of Physical Education and three games sessions per week.
PE lessons cover athletics, badminton, basketball,
gymnastics and swimming. Cricket, Football, Hockey,
Rugby and Tennis represent the major school games for
boys, with Hockey, Netball, Hockey and Rounders being
the major games for the girls.
The sports hall - ‘Montgomery Hall’ named after Viscount
Bernard Montgomery of Alemein – was built in 1998 and
provides opportunities for a variety of leisure
activities including badminton, judo, tennis and many
other sports.
Pupils are also able to enjoy the excellent grounds that
include two large all weather facilities (both
floodlight) that provide for football, hockey, netball,
tennis, in addition to lawn tennis courts and twenty
acres of playing fields.
In recent years teams and individuals have gained
honours in local, county, regional and national
tournaments and competitions in a variety of sports,
especially Rugby, Cricket, Tennis, Rounder, Netball.
The Tennis Programme
The programme is lead by Head Coach Andy Warry supported
by five professional coaches all LTA, USPTR qualified. A
Tennis Co-ordinator administers the programme.
Pupils have access to numerous floodlight courts
(including two lawn tennis courts) and one full size
indoor court.
Tennis is introduced from Reception and 50% of all
pupils go on to have private tuition at school, ranging
from ‘social’ to ‘elite’ performance levels.
There are various school teams playing at local,
regional and national level. In addition to which there
is a thriving intra-school programme, at an individual
and house level.
The ‘elite performance’ group are at least county
standard for their age groups and combine intensive
specialist tuition with their academic studies by
flexible timetabling.
In 2005 the first tennis scholar (who joined Amesbury in
Year 4) left aged 13+ after winning a scholarship to the
LTA’s National Tennis Academy in Bath, having
successfully combined academic commitments with
intensive additional tennis tuition.
